Labels and epics

Labels and epics are two simple ways to add a bit of order to a busy board. A label is a small, colour-coded tag you stick on a card to mark it however your team likes (for example “Snag”, “Client to approve”, or “Order”). An epic is a named group that ties related cards together under one bigger piece of work (for example “Kitchen fit-out” or “Ground floor”). You set both up once for a project, then reuse them across every card.

If the board itself is new to you, read the board overview first, and Working with cards for how cards work.

  • Create labels and give each one a name and a colour.
  • Create epics with a name, a colour, and an optional short description.
  • Edit or delete a label or an epic at any time.
  • Put labels and an epic onto a card from the card’s detail panel.
  • Filter the whole board down to a single epic, and search cards by label.

Labels and epics live in the project’s Board settings. That tab only appears if you are allowed to manage the project, so this is something an admin or a project manager sets up. Everyone else simply uses the labels and epics that are already there.

Labels are made in a single modal where you can add several at once, which is handy when you are setting up a new board.

  1. Open the board and go to Board settings (or Settings > Board settings from anywhere in the project).
  2. Find the Labels section and click Add label.
  3. Type a name (at least two letters) and pick a colour from the swatches.
  4. To add more in the same go, click Add another and fill in the next row.
  5. Click Add label to save. A short message confirms how many were created.

Each label name must be unique within the project. If you try to add one that already exists, Wyroo quietly skips it rather than making a duplicate.

To change a label, click the pencil next to it, edit the name or colour, and save. To remove one, click the bin and confirm. Deleting a label takes it off any cards it was applied to, but the cards themselves stay.

Epics are added one at a time, because each one usually carries a little more thought than a label.

  1. In Board settings, find the Epics section and click Add epic.
  2. Type a name (at least two letters).
  3. Pick a colour, and optionally add a short description of what the epic covers.
  4. Click Add epic to save.

Editing and deleting work the same way as labels: use the pencil to change an epic, or the bin to remove it. When you delete an epic, the cards that were in it are not deleted; they simply lose the link to that epic.

Tip: If you already have a list of epics somewhere (a spreadsheet, a project plan), you can bring them in together when you import a backlog rather than typing each one. See The backlog.

  1. Open any card to see its detail panel.
  2. In the side panel, find the Epic field and pick one epic from the list. A card belongs to at most one epic.
  3. Find the Labels field and tick every label that applies. A card can carry as many labels as you need.
  4. Your choice saves on its own. There is no separate save button.

If the lists are empty, the card points you to Board settings so you (or an admin) can create the first ones.

Once cards are tagged, labels and epics turn the board into something you can slice quickly.

  • Filter by epic. Above the columns, open the epic dropdown and choose one. The board then shows only the cards in that epic, so you can focus on, say, just the kitchen work.
  • Search by label. The search box above the board matches on label as well as on card title and number, so typing a label name pulls up every card that carries it.

Tip: Keep labels few and meaningful. A handful of clear labels everyone understands beats a long list nobody remembers. Use epics for the big phases of the job and labels for the cross-cutting marks like “Urgent” or “Waiting on client”.
